Old Fashioned Cabbage Rolls

I always loved cooking, but I was especially intrigued by traditional foods that had been around for generations. My great-grandmother shared her recipe for old fashioned cabbage rolls with me, telling me tales of how she used to make them for her own family when she was a young woman.

I was so intrigued by this centuries old recipe that I decided to make a batch of cabbage rolls for my family. I started by gathering all of the ingredients; cabbage, beef, rice, onions, garlic, and tomatoes. Then I proceeded to stew the cabbage leaves in boiling water until they became limp. I stuffed each leaf with the mixture of beef, rice and seasonings, and rolled them up, then secured them with kitchen twine.

The best part about cabbage rolls is that they’re incredibly versatile. You can add different spices to the filling, such as cumin, oregano, or paprika, or substitute the ground beef or pork with turkey or vegetarian alternatives. You can also switch up the type of cabbage used and try other leafy greens like collard greens or Swiss chard.
