Easy Refried Beans

Let’s talk about one of the tastiest side dishes to make for your Taco Tuesday. Refried Beans are the recipe for today. And, if I’m being honest, it is typically an underestimated dish. These Refried Beans need to be on your table tonight! They are easy to make, fun to use as a dip, and delicious to eat! 

Most likely, you see cans of refried beans on grocery store shelves. You might even be wondering, why you can’t just buy one of those instead. Well, you certainly can. However, homemade is best!

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon 1 extra-virgin olive oil

  • 2 cups 2 canned pinto beans, rinsed and drained

  • 1 teaspoon 1 garlic powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon 1/2 chili powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon 1/2 cumin

  • 2 tablespoons 2 water

  • 1 teaspoon 1 fresh lime juice

  • salt and pepper, to taste

Directions

  • In a saucepan over medium heat, heat olive oil and add pinto beans, garlic powder, chili powder, cumin, and water. Cook for 5 to 6 minutes.
  • Turn heat down to low and use a potato masher to mash the mixture to your liking.
  • Add lime juice, salt and pepper.
  • Cook for 3 to 5 more minutes. Add more water if necessary.
  • Serve and Enjoy!

Notes

  • Black beans may be used in place of pinto beans. However, you might need to use more water.

Canned refried beans are loaded with unnecessary ingredients. They typically contain a lot of sodium too. It’s always better to make your own Refried Beans because you can make more for less money and you know exactly what is going in it. If you know what is going in the dish, then you also know what you are putting into your body. 

No need to worry, this dish does not take long at all to make. Only 3 minutes of prep and 5 minutes of cooking time is all that is needed to make this recipe. You will be eating in no time at all! 

Just a handful of ingredients are required to make this. They are 1 teaspoon of extra-virgin olive oil, 2 cups of canned pinto beans that are rinsed and drained, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, ½ teaspoon of chili powder, ½ teaspoon of cumin, 2 tablespoons of water, 1 teaspoon of fresh lime juice, salt, and pepper, to taste.

You’ll notice that Pinto beans are needed for this recipe. Pinto beans work perfectly for this recipe because they are buttery and easy to mash. You can use black beans instead, however, they will be drier. You will just have to add a bit more water. Try to add a teaspoon of water at a time. 

These Refried Beans are delicious when served with tortilla chips. You can also serve them with tacos, enchiladas, and burritos. It is entirely up to you how you choose to eat them. If it tastes good to you, then it IS good!

For a breakfast option, serve these with Huevos Rancheros. Huevos Rancheros is a Mexican dish that consists of sunny-side-up eggs on top of tortillas and then loaded with salsa. Make it colorful with some fresh chopped cilantro!
